Jeremy Brown's Bible Commentary - John

John was a disciple of Jesus. He was 12 years old when he began following Christ. This age is computed using the year of his death and the age at which he died according to the church fathers. At age 68 in 83AD, John wrote this book. In 120AD, John died at 105 years old on Patmos and was buried in Ephesus. He was the only disciple of Jesus that was not martyred.

The Word (Jesus) has existed forever, was at the beginning of creation week, was with God (Father and Spirit), and is God. See Isaiah 9:6.
1:1
The Word (Jesus) has always been with God (Father and Spirit).
1:2
The Word (Jesus) created everything. 1:3
The Word (Jesus) is the source of all life and His life is the light (foundation of wisdom, knowledge, happiness; desires to return humankind and the universe to its original state of perfection) for all people.
1:4
The light of truth (Jesus) began lighting up the darkness (ignorance, evil, lack of knowledge, lack of wisdom) but the darkness and those affected by the darkness didn't understand or accept it. 1:5

And the Word (Jesus) became a man and lived on Earth with humans. We saw Him (Jesus) and recognized Him (Jesus) for who He (Jesus) really is. He (Jesus) is the King and the Son of God. He (Jesus) is overflowing with mercy, a desire to rescue humanity and the universe, and all answers to all questions. See Isaiah 40:5. 1:14
